Abstract

This study explained psychology of literature, especially about narcissism complex that appeared in the major character. In this research, the writer analyzes one of the most populer novel entitled Emma by Jane Austen. The main purpose of this research is to explore Emma’s narcissistic personality disorder on Emma novel by using Psychoanalysis. To analyze the problem structurally, the writer uses psychological approach since this research is focused on the narcissism complex that reflected in Emma character. The theory that the writer applied narcissistic personality disorder theory from Campbell, W.K., and Baumeister, Roy F (2006) to know the symptoms and characteristics. Moreover, this analysis applied descriptive qualitative method to depict clearly about the problem in the behaviours. The result of this analysis shows that the symptoms and characteristics of narcissism complex appear on Emma character. First, Emma has grandiose sense, she believes that she has the important role in Mrs. Taylor life because she matched Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Weston. She lacks empathy to Mr. Martin, Emma influenced Harriet to refuse Mr. Martin as her desire. Second, Emma shows the characteristic of narcissism complex. Emma shows her arrogant behavior when Emma told to Mr. Knightley how proud she is, because of her tallent in matchmaking skill. Emma also told to Harriet that Emma will never be a poor old maid.
