Abstract

This thesis discusses a novel entitled Carrie by Stephen King. The aim of this research is to identify how the author built the suspense of the plot in the story. Further, in order to describe the suspense of plot in the story of the novel, this research is using descriptive qualitative method and using structural affect theory by Vorderer (2013). To find the deep analysis the writer also uses structuralism approach as the way to answer the research question. The result of this research shows that the suspense of plot happens in the three elements of plot; events, conflict and climax. The writer found about 29 events of total which consists of 25 initiating events and 4 foreshadowing. The initiating events are indicating as the scene where readers commonly asking about what will happens next after one act and foreshadowing is indicating as hints when something is about to happen or somebody is about to be introduced. Also, the suspense of plot in the story is categorized as macro and micro suspense of plot since all the sentences or words which categorize as a suspense is clearly stated in the novel.
