Abstract

Being polite is strategy that people commonly used in conversation. This thesis is aimed at examining politeness strategy of Face Threatening Acts used by participants in TV talk show. The writer applied the theory of politeness strategy proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). Meanwhile, for the method, the writer used qualitative method to describe the data in the form of word, phrase or sentence. The data are taken from the utterances of both host and the addressee in the Jonathan Ross Show with Cristiano Ronaldo as guest star. Furthermore, this thesis shows that there are four types of politeness strategies produced by the participants, which are bald on record, off record, negative politeness and positive politeness. In bald on record the writer found 1 datum, off record 1 datum, negative politeness 19 data and the last positive politeness 23 data. In addition, politeness strategies are used to minimize the threat in asking and responding question between the host and the guest.
