Abstract

This thesis entitled the Dismantlement of Masculinity in Veronica Rossi’s Under the Never Sky Trilogy discusses the construction of masculinity in a literary series called Under the Never Sky. Masculinity is often stereotypically depictured as extreme strength, stoicism and aggression. Furthermore, the writer dismantles the portrayal of masculinity in this study to see its construction. Thus, the writer aims to deconstruct the masculinity within the trilogy seen from the portrayal of the male protagonist called Peregrine or known as Perry, throughout the series. This study employed Jacques Derrida's deconstruction theory. Therefore, this study will be the first study conducted under deconstruction theory within the literary series Veronica Rossi’s Under the Never Sky. Jeff Hearn’s critical studies on men and masculinities were also applied to strengthen the finding and the analysis. Furthermore, this study uses qualitative descriptive; thus, the writer described the analysis meticulously and analyzed the data critically. The result of the study reveals there is a hidden meaning within the trilogy. By finding the dominant and secondary elements and doing binary opposition, the writer discovered the hidden meaning of a new definition of masculinity that is less oppressing and dictating toward men. The masculinity shown through the male protagonist's portrayal proves that men can be strong and embrace their weakness, assertive and respectful, tough, compassionate, and emotional. Keywords: binary opposition, deconstruction, gender, masculinities
