Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the types of collocation errors produced by university students in their writings. The writer uses qualitative research as the research design of this study. The data are the final examination in the form of essay writings of the second semester students. 15 writings are collected and analyzed for the collocation errors. The writer uses the collocation categories defined by Benson et al. (1997). Moreover, the writer employs Oxford collocation dictionary and The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English to provide suggestion for the errors. The result shows that the students made grammatical and lexical collocation errors in their writings, with a total of 35 grammatical collocations and 40 lexical collocations. The findings show that verb + noun collocation is the most dominant errors found in the student’s writings which indicate that the students have difficulty in using proper verb in collocation.
