Abstract

This study aims at finding out the types of presupposition triggers inside the speech of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign speech and also looking for potential presuppositions derived from their trigger inside the speech. The researcher used qualitative method to describe the types of presupposition trigger and to explain the presuppositions coming from each trigger found. The researcher used the theory of Levinson’s presupposition triggers (1983) to analyze the data. This study started by transcribing the utterances of one of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign speech video to collect the data. Then, the analyzing steps were done by finding the triggers of presupposition, categorizing the triggers of presupposition, analyzing the triggers to find out the presupposition implied inside the utterances, evaluating the result, and the last concluding the result. The result showed that there were so many presupposition triggers found inside the speech. Meanwhile, the researcher scopes the findings by sorting out the types of presupposition triggers which has major appearance inside the speech. There are four kinds of presupposition triggers to be analyzed further which are definite descriptions, change of state verbs, iteratives, and temporal clause. Analysis of the data revealed that the frequent use of presupposition triggers inside the speech help the speaker to communicate his political intention to the audience.
