Abstract

This thesis discusses the racial microaggressions on women in the novel Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid. The women in question in this study are, focusing on Emira, the main African-American character with her experience of living a predominantly white life. The main purpose of this study is to see how racial microaggressions which is a subtle but harmful form of racism faced by people of color is depicted in the novel. The study of this thesis applied the sociological approach and microaggressions theory developed by Sue, et al. (2007) which categorizing the racial microaggressions into three forms, including (1) microassaults, (2) microinsults, and (3) microinvalidations, applied in this thesis. This study focusing on the analyzing on the dialogue and narrations, also the interactions between the characters in Such a Fun Age novel by using the descriptive-qualitative method to identifying the examples from each form of racial microaggressions depicted in the novel. The result of this analysis on Such a Fun Age novel, reveal how Emira as main character faces three forms of racial microaggressions firstly proposed by Pierce (1970) and developed by Sue, et al. (2007), such as microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations. Emira faces overt racial assaults, subtle judgment about her role from her surrounding which in white predominantly, and rejection of her feelings, thought, and her experiences. Reid's novel highlights how these everyday racial microaggressions encounters deeply impact Emira's self-esteem and autonomy.
