Abstract

Representation Of China On BBC News Online In The Issue Of Military Drills Around Taiwan Ayu Lestari 16111048 This study aimed to reveal how BBC News portrays China in the issue of military drills around Taiwan by using articles published by BBC News from 2022 -2024. This study employed Fairclough's Three-Dimensional Framework as the main theory which focuses on textual analysis, discourse practice, and socio-cultural practice. The data were gathered from seven chosen articles from the official website of BBC News. The findings revealed that BBC employed the modal auxiliary “will” and “would” more frequently than the other modalities. In addition, BBC News was using more active sentences than passive ones while representing China in their news articles. Moreover, BBC News used “encirclement” as the most used nominalization to describe China in the issue of military drills around Taiwan. Meanwhile, in terms of Discursive Practice, the writer found that BBC News defended its point of view by using indirect sentences compared to the other existing reporting in presenting the news. Lastly, it was revealed that in socio-cultural practice, the issue occurred due to China's forceful attempt to reunify with Taiwan. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, china, fairclough three-dimensional framework, military drills, taiwan, textual analysis.
