Abstract

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DIRECT METHOD TO IMPROVE STUDENT’S SPEAKING ABILITY AT THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK NEGERI 1 TERBANGGI BESAR Yuni Tri Lestari 20113009 This research aims to determine the effect of the Direct Method to improve students' speaking abilities using narrative text, in class XI AKL SMK Negeri 1 Terbanggi Besar. Researcher use experimental research methods and quantitative research. The population of this study was class XI students of SMK Negeri 1 Terbanggi Besar. The research sample was selected using purposive sampling technique. The sample in this study was class XI AKL 1 and XI AKL 2, totaling 60 students. Next, the researcher used pre-test and post-test as instruments in the research. In the research process, the researcher taught using the Direct Method to improve students' speaking skills. Apart from that, the researcher collected data for this research by following several steps, including giving a pre-test, giving special treatment by retelling the story about the narrative text given and giving a post-test at the end of the research. The data in this study was calculated using SPSS version 27, the results of this study showed that the average class score after being treated using the Direct Method experienced a significant increase with a significant value of 0.00. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant influence of using the Direct Method on the speaking skills of class XI AKL students at SMK Negeri 1 Terbanggi Besar in the 2023/2024 academic year.
