Abstract

This study examines the views of William Kamkwamba as a writer in the memoir The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind which is adapted from a true story that occurred in Malawi. At that time Malawi was being hit by extreme climate change that caused hunger, and several other social problems that arose. In his memoir, William tells how the condition of society in 2000. This study aims to find out how William Kamkwamba views the education system in Africa, especially the area where William lives, namely Malawi. With a focus on the sociology of literature, this research applies Lucien Goldman's genetic structuralism to analyses this issue. By using a dialectical method, this study elaborates human fact which correlated William’s life and the memoir. The analysis also delineated collective subject which elaborated social background from the society at that time. The world view of African education was delineated through the memoir from William’s perspective. Finally, this study finds out that the memoir The Boy Who harnessed The Wind portrayed the African education based on William’s view on the society at that time. In this memoir, William subjected the Malawian’s economic collapsed as the cause of the education failure in Malawi. The government failure to overcome the economic condition also subjected to education failure. William’s view in his memoir focused on how education in Malawi could be improved by the raise of economic. This economic rise was supported by William effort in building and making windmill. Jurnal
