Abstract

In classroom interaction, lecturer is required to be a facilitator to lead discussion and help students to be critical. Question has been one of the strategies frequently used to increase students’ communication and critical thinking skill, and to create interactive learning. The objective of this study was to investigate question-planning and question-controlling strategies used by lecturers in English literature lectures in Indonesian university setting. This study used Rido, Ibrahim & Nambiar’s (2015) conceptual framework on questioning strategies and applied qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were three lecturers of English literature who taught prose, literary criticism, and drama lecture. To collect data, library research was used. The data were analyzed using five steps, creating database, open-coding, focused-coding, developing emergent theme, and presenting the findings. The results indicated that all lecturers used both question-planning and question-controlling strategies. In using question-planning strategies, the lecturers employed various types of questions such as display, referential, follow up, and rhetorical questions. These strategies were to check student’s comprehension, emphasize certain point of explanation, sharpen their communication and critical thinking skills, and make the learning become more interactive. Furthermore, the lecturers also employed question-controlling strategies such as phrasing question first then nominating student, asking question to the entire class, encouraging students to initiate question, and moving closer to student when asking question. These strategies were used to help students in understanding the questions, provide opportunities for all students to participate, give them more time to think, encourage them to speak, ensure them cope with the learning process, and boost their participation in the class. In conclusion, questioning strategies gave positive impacts toward students’ learning development especially in communication and critical thinking in literature lectures.
