Abstract

This study aimed to look at the representation of Aceh’s judicial caning in The Jakarta Post online newspaper and exposing the underlying ideology behind the representation. A qualitative approach was applied in this study while the data were collected from library research. Moreover, this study used Fairclough’s three-dimension model to reveal the representation and the ideology behind the representation. Besides, in textual analysis, this study employed Johnstone’s (2008) explanation that consists of active and passive voice, naming, pre and post modifier, and direct and indirect quotation. The findings showed that in the textual analysis The Jakarta post dominantly used active voice, naming collective, clausal post modifier, and direct quotation. First, the use of active voice was to state some activists and organizations against judicial caning punishment. Second, collective naming was dominantly used to name people in the news report. The collective naming was mainly used to describe activists and human rights defenders. Third, the use of clause post modifier, in which it was used to provide more detailed information about the defendant and the ruling. Fourth, the use of direct quotation, in which it was used to describe particular people’s opinions, particularly those who watch the judicial caning and some human right defenders. Moreover, in the interpretation, The Jakarta post represented the judicial caning in Aceh as criticized punishment. In the last stage, The Jakarta Post attempted to construct an ideology of agreeing to human rights defenders. From the analysis, it was found that the use of Johnstone’s approach and Fairclough’s model are very helpful in critical discourse analysis. This study is expected to give knowledge to society on how media construct their ideology in their discourse. Keywords: Aceh’s Judicial caning, Critical Discourse Analysis, representation, threedimensional model.
