Abstract

This thesis discuss about the analysis of A Christmas Carol novel written by Charles Dickens using Greimas structuralism. The focus of the analysis is finding the kind of plot in the story. Plot is a sequence of events that occurs to characters in situations in the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Additionally, plot related to the ending of the story. The ending in the plot of the story is open and closed plot. There are several questions that researcher wants to find, they are how do the elements of plot structure compose the plot of the story and kind of plot is applied in the novel and the kind of plot in this novel. In finding the answer of those questions, first act is finding the elements of plot. After finding the elements of plot, the writer makes a plot table in order to put every event from beginning to the end. The next step is dividing the whole story into five events; every event is analyzed using actant by A.J. Greimas. After those events are analyzed, the writer adds together those events in complete event. Then, the writer makes a plot diagram based on that event. Finally, the writer resumed what are kind of plot and the ending of the novel. Keywords: A Christmas Carol, Plot Structure, Actantial Diagrams.
