Abstract

This research is entitled Cultural Equivalence in Boemi Manusia and This Earth of Mankind novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The aims of this research are to analyse the translation of words with cultural terms in Boemi Manusia into This Earth of Mankind and the consequences that come after translating the novel. This research also used qualitative method and library research. The data of this research is focused on words classified as concepts of noun only of cultural terms in the novel. The consideration lies in the fact that this kind of category is the most often in occurrence in the novel. The researcher must be examined if the translation has done in transferring the messages of the data or not because, in fact, the translation still brings effects on the results. The researcher also used the concept of cultural equivalence from Baker. The finding of this research, this translation strategies suggested by Baker (2008) that is used by the translator in Boemi Manusia and This Earth of Mankind novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer contained on words and concepts only exist in Indonesia not in English. On the other hand, the writer cannot cover the meaning of the concept culturally. It is the concepts in ST above do not have equivalents in English because those concepts only exist in Indonesia. The researcher believes that the reason translators use a number of translated equivalent word is because the translators wanted to introduce Indonesian cultures to readers, which mostly the reader of translated versions are not Indonesian.
