Abstract

This reseacrh was designed to know the functions of gerund phrases used in B2B News articles. Gerund phrases function as a subject, gerund phrases as object, and gerund phrases as subject complement. Descriptive qualitative method is applied in this reseacrh because this type of research is based on data expressed mostly in the form of words or phrases dealing with function of gerund phrases rather than numbers. The writer used five selecting data by using purposive sampling of Berita 2 Bahasa in October 2019 edition. Analyzing the data, the writer employes Frank theory (1972) covering three main functions: they are as a subject, as object, and as subject complement. The result of this analysis discovered 25 data that contributed into three main functions ofgerund phrase, that are as subjecttaking 3 data, object14data and subject complement8 data. The writer found that editorial writer most frequently usedgerund phrase as object to show the relationship between what is being discussed and the action of verbs, it is in order to make the information clear through the writing.
