Abstract

The process of translation is not only about how to change from source language (SL) into target language (TL), but it also about how to make the information from the message of source language to target language delivered to the listeners/readers. Thus, a proper technique needs to be applied to get proper result of translation. In that case, regarding to the translation technique, the writer in this research is interested in analyzing unit shift translation of A Haunted House short story by Virginia Woolf from English to Indonesian. Further, the objective of this research is to describe and classify the types of unit shift found in Woolf’s A Haunted House short story. In doing the analysis, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method and proposed Catford theory (1965). As the result of this analysis, the writer finds out that there are six patterns of unit shift translation from English grammatical units to Indonesian grammatical units that are used in the short story of A Haunted House by Virginia Woolf, they are: word to morpheme (9 data), word to phrase (8 data), phrase to word (5 data), clause to phrase (4 data), sentence to phrase (2 data), sentence to phrase (1 datum) and sentence to clause (1 datum). Further, the writer noticed that there are two different cases of unit change, first is from higher to lower rank and secondly from low to higher rank. In the case of high to lower rank happened because in doing the translation, the translator omits words that does not need to be translated, while in the low to higher rank, the translator needs to put additional words so that the translation result sound natural and acceptable
