Abstract

Alter ego refers to the second personality that is possessed by individuals, whether in reality or described by author in a literary work. Thus, since alter ego is related to personality, it only can be analyzed by using psychological approach. In that case, the writer in this research is interested in analyzing a literary work that is related to psychological issue that is about alter ego. However, instead of novel or drama, the writer chooses modern literary work of Split movie as the object of analysis. Further, in this analysis, the writer focuses in describing the portrayal of the dominant personalities of alter ego from the main character in Split movie and examines the causes of the alter ego. In doing the analysis, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method and proposed Mesmer’s theory. Hence, as the result of the analysis, the writer found that the although the main character, Kevin Wendell Crumb is having 24 different personalities, only four of them are dominant in the movie, they are Dennis, Patricia, Hedwig and The Beast. Also, the writer notices that the cause of Kevin’s alter ego comes from his traumatic experience in his childhood because during his childhood, he was tortured by his own mother.
