Abstract

This research is purposively conducted in order to reveal psychological issue particularly the symptoms and traits of sociopathic personality disorder within the main character of Lolita novel namely Humbert Humbert who has an obsession of loving under-age girl and try to possess her by any means. The writer studied Lolita novel by Vladimir Nabokov as a unit analysis and applied psychological approach and sociopathic personality disorder theories. The method which used by the writer is qualitive method. The method assits the writer to explain the symptoms and characteristics of sociopathic personality disorder within Humbert Humbert character. Furthermore, the writer gain the data by collecting it in Lolita novel and analyze it qualitatively by using Helmenstine and Loewen’s theories of sociopathic personality disorder which described Humbert’s psychological issue of his immoral actions like sexual deviant and murdering people. Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer reveals six symptoms of sociopath in Humbert’s character, they are: failure to conform to social norms, frequent lying to pursue the goal, incapable to maintain relationships with others, tend to release the wrath aggressively, disregard to keep others’ safety, and often to perform impulsive behavior. Moreover, the writer also found that Humbert has six traits of sociopath which are cold trait, rogue charm, manipulative demeanor, lack of empathy, paranoid behavior, and sexually deviant deportment.
