Abstract

This research analyze the grammatical cohesion in Obamacare debate that used by the speaker. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of grammatical cohesion, and to explain the use of grammatical cohesion by speakers in the text of Obamacare Debate. The writer uses Halliday and Hasan (1976) model of grammatical cohesion as the theory and discourse analysis as the approach. Grammatical cohesion is divided into four, reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. The writer also applies qualitative method since the writer gives detailed description and explanation in the research. The data sources for this research is in the script text of Obamacare debate. Furthermore, the result of analysis is showing that all of types of grammatical cohesion are found in the research. The dominant data which is used by speakers in Obamacare debate text is Conjunction. Therefore, the speakers use conjunction to give more explaination about their opinion in a good way to convey the ideas in the limited time without changing the information. In other hand, it shows that some nature of speakers’s characteristics when they deliver their ideas spontaneously.
