Abstract

This thesis discusses a novel by Lauren Weisberger’s entitled The Devil Wears Prada. It is aimed to identify the oppression through the character of Andrea and Emily. Specifically, the purpose of this research is to know and explain oppression toward workers occur in The Devil Wears Prada novel. The writer applies sociological approach and oppression theory by the theorist Irish Marion Young. The theorist devides oppression into five forms are exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism and violence. The data of this research are based on the narration and dialogue inside the novel. This research was conducted by library research and qualitative method. The result of this analysis presents four forms of oppression that are potrayed inside the novel. There are exploitation, marginalization and powerlessness and cultural imperialism happened towards Runaway workers especially Andrea Sachs and Emily.
