Abstract

This thesis discusses a short story by Shirley Jackson entitled The Lottery.It is aimed to describe the symbols of death through the character and the things that used in that short story. The writer applies Semiotic approach and theory of symbol by Roland Barthes in 1972. The theorist divides symbols into three forms are connotation, dennotation, and myth. Each of form has different interpretation of meaning of death. The data of this research are based on the narration and quotation inside the short story. This research was conducted by library research and descriptive qualitative method. The results of this analysis show that the author used different kinds of signs to symbolize the death. The signs form dennotation and connotation meaning, but mostly the signs formed connotation meaning, the symbols of death found in the lottery are Mr. Graves, Wooden Black Box, The Lottery, and Black Spot.
