Abstract

This research aimed to understand how Lacan’s three orders develop in Agustinus’s self identification. Self-identification is a process in defining the individual identity. It is one of human’s problems that relates to self-existence. This research is aimed to analyze Agustinus’s role in writing a travel writing, entitled My Healing with Vipassana which has three sub-titles. They are A Happiness Seeker and His Breath, Nothing is Permanent and The Art of Simple Life. Thus, tells about the “self-identification” of a subject that had something that is terrible about what he experienced. Agustinus feels terribly wrong after his parent’s death. Then Agustinus decided to join and give it a try. He then joined meditation called Vipassana or no other that “mind surgery”. Lacanian psychoanalysis is applied in this research related to self identification, through Lacan’s “three orders”. Namely The Imaginary, The Symbolic and The Real. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach; it means the data which is used to support this research is in the form of sentence and paragraph. As a result, Agustinus is identified using Lacanian stages along with the writing My Healing with Vipassana. In the Imaginary Order, Agustinus feels that the other is the same as him. He said that everybody is equal. In this order also he misrecognizes the self identification in observing the meditation then he changed the way of his thinking. In The Symbolic Order, Agustinus tries to satisfy other attendants at the meditation. That is because his problem was external; therefore Agustinus cannot fully concentrate in doing Vipassana. He always looked for other’s desire to be fulfilled by him. In The Symbolic also consists of the society’s ideologies; such as beliefs, values, government system and other. It shown in the text that Agustinus limited by the rules of the Silas. The Symbolic Order dominates human culture and social order. In The Real Order he feels something lack from his life after left by his parents. He needs to fulfill the loss by joining Vipassana and doing such breath observation because in the real order, the subject knows that he needs something but he does not know what and why he needs.
