Abstract

January first is one of the novels by Michael Schofield. It is chosen as the object of this research. The portrayal of child schizophrenia is the main theme in this research. The focus of this analysis are to explain about the characteristics and causes of child suffer schizophrenia as seen in main character as portrayed in Schofield’s January First novel. To support this analysis the writer used some theories and an approach. The theories are about the characteristic of child schizophrenia and the cause of child schizophrenia. This research applied psychological approach by Wittig (2001). Furthermore, library research was applies to collect the data, and descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze the data by sentence. The analysis show that child schizophrenia is one of the problems in a family. Janni is a child who suffers this disorder. The result of this analysis shows the characteristics of schizophrenics child are hallucination, delusion and thought disorder. In addition, the causes of schizophrenic child that happened in Janni’s life are genetics and stress.
