Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the correlation between students’ motivation and their speaking performance at the eleventh grade of SMKN 3 Terbanggi Besar and to find out the reason why students have low motivation and low speaking performance. This research used a quantitative approach in a correlational design. This research instrument used a questionnaire, speaking test, and interview. This Research showed that there was a correlation between student’s motivation and their speaking performance in average correlation. It was proven by the Pearson Product moment correlation with a score of 0.421, and the Spearman rank coefficient showed that there was a positive correlation between the two variables which means the Hypothesis alternative is accepted. Besides that, based on the follow-up to students who had low motivation and low speaking performance, it was found that the students had low motivation because they felt hard to understand the material because the teacher taught with English, limit facilities to learn English, and because they were influenced by friends and they did not like speaking English because they lake proper vocabulary and they did not know how to pronounce sentence or word.
