Abstract

Being a global language and having a significant impact on Indonesia's educational and professional growth, make English a crucial language. Awareness of the difficulty of listening for EFL students ended up with the study that investigates the use of authentic media, such as movies, to motivate and engage students in the learning process in order to solve the difficulties associated with acquiring listening skills. The potential of movie media as a useful tool for improving listening skills in EFL classrooms is highlighted in this study. This research focuses on the significant impact of Disney movies on students' listening skills, particularly in the context of teaching English at SMAN 1 Mesuji. In this study, a quasi-experimental design was used. Disney movies were used for the experimental group, while audio conversations were used in the control group. The participants of this research were second-grade students of SMAN 1 Mesuji. Both classes took a pre-test before the treatment began. The post-test was then administered following the administration of the treatment. There were 40 questions on the test. The results from both classes were analyzed with a t-test with a significance level of a = 0.05. The results reveal that the mean score of the experimental class was 69.66, while the control class was 60.23. The result of the t-test showed that the p-value gained was 0.001 which was lower than 0.05. This indicates that there is a significant impact on students' listening skills. In comparison to the control group, the experimental group's listening abilities significantly improved. The utilization of Disney movies had a positive impact on the students' vocabulary retention, comprehension of opinions and advice-related sentences, and word identification abilities. It emphasizes the importance of utilizing engaging and authentic materials to enhance language learning outcomes and suggests the integration of technology in the classroom to facilitate autonomous learning.
