Abstract

Mental health issues are an issue that is often heard recently. Many mental health issues are expressed in various literary works, one of which is film. However, for some people the issue of mental health is not an important thing to discuss, even though when someone's mental health is damaged it will have a big impact on the physical health or even the social life of the sufferer. For this reason, this research was created to provide information about mental health issues through a character in the film Welcome To Me (2014) named Alice. Alice is the main character in the film Welcome To Me which was released in 2014. It is said in the film that Alice has a mental illness called borderline personality disorder (BPD). The mental illness suffered by Alice causes Alice to have abnormal behavior which makes her social relationships not work as well as other people. This research focuses on how the symptoms of BPD are depicted in the character Alice and what causes the development of BPD suffered by Alice. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method in which data that has been obtained through the films watched is analyzed based on theory. The theories used are the DSM theory from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and Sigmand Freud theory. This research found that there were five symptoms experienced by Alice, namely impulsive behavior, intense anger, emotional instability, poor intra-personal relationships, and fear of abandonment. All of these symptoms are described through Alice's behavior and how Alice responds to several things. It was also found that two factors caused the development of BPD in Alice, namely Alice's closeness to her parents and friends and also social factors in the form of traumatic bullying events that Alice received as a teenager.
