Abstract

This study discusses social bond in Harris’ novel Dead in Family. Therefore, this research aims to discuss the elements of social bonds through characters in Dead in Family novel. The objective of this study are to find the to find the social bond in Harris’ Dead in Family based on Hirschi’s social bonding elements. This research used descriptive qualitative method typically library research with textual analysis since data of this research are in the form of sentences and dialogues. The primary data source is novel Harris’ Dead in Family novel. This research used sociology of literature as the approach and used Social Bonds theory by Hirschi (1969). The result of this research shows that Dead in Family novel is clearly described social bond that consists of attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief through characters’ narrations and dialogues in the novel.
