Abstract

This research aims to discuss the portrayal of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that was experienced by the character Pauline in Nicola Yoon’s novel entitled Everything, Everything. The objectives of this study are to find and describe the symptoms of PTSD suffered by Pauline and how the novel portrayed it. The causes, symptoms, and impact of PTSD were also discussed in this research. This research used the descriptive qualitative method to describe and explain the data. The researcher collected the data in the form of dialogues, words, and sentences from the main data resource, which is the novel Everything, Everything. To support the data, supporting data from articles and journals are also used. This research used psychology literature as the approach. To find the result, the researcher used the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder theory by Gerald C. Davidson (2006). The theory helps researchers find the causes, symptoms, and impacts of PTSD experienced by characters where the cause of PTSD she suffers is due to environmental factors, for the symptoms that appear in her are avoidance and hyperosoaul, and the character also gets the impact of changes in the mind, namely denying reality. The results of this research show that Pauline in the novel Everything, Everything suffered from PTSD because she showed the symptoms of PTSD. The result also shows that she obtained PTSD from environmental factors.
