Abstract

Social classes not only create differences but also create identity during the social interaction process. Therefore, this study aims to discuss Bourdieu’s social classes as described in Upside Down movie 2012 which tells about people’s life in two difference planets with opposite gravity, they also live with difference social condition between the up world and the down world planet. This study uses Bourdieu’s social class theory with the objective in order to reveal Bourdieu’s social classes based on its capitals as described in Upside Down movie. This study is typical library research with descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study show that there are two social classes: upper class and lower class society, those are determined by economic capital, social capital, cultural and symbolic capital. Upper class society has strong economic power to shape their life in which to become part of TransWorld, they also have big chance to meet and have good position and treatment in their society also at the TransWorld, they could enjoy orchestra and expensive dinner as their cultural capital, they usually wear colorful dressing as their symbolic capital. Meanwhile, the lower class society has less economic power that made them to become thieves and robber since there was less available job for them, they got bad treatment from the upper class society in the social capital, they would rather enjoy play paper airplane and simple dinner than enjoy the orchestra show, they usually wear daily black dressing with dirty appearance as their symbolic capital.
