Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze Politeness Strategy Used by Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama in 2020 Vision Tour Interview. In this research, the researchers chose a live talk show between two public figures to become the object of research, namely 2020 Vision Tour Interview. This study only focuses on identifying the use of politeness strategies classified by Brown and Levinson (1987). The results of this study the researcher found 4 politeness strategies used by Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama in 2020 Vision Tour Interview. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the type of politeness that is most used in conversations between Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama is the positive politeness strategy which consists of 14 data. Meanwhile other types of politeness strategy which are Bald on record consist of 2 data, Negative Politeness consist of 1 data and off record only consist of 1 data. The result of the analysis show that Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama often use positive politeness strategies so this strategy is widely used by Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama to minimize the distance between them by expressing friendliness and a strong interest in the hearer's need to be respected. Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama, they both give the impression to each other that they have the same desire. So, it shows closeness and good relations so as to minimize social distance between Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.
