Abstract

The aim of this research is to elaborate the author’s worldview towards French Society in 19th century as portrayed in Emile Zola’s Germinal. To overcome the research question structurally, the writer arranged the literature review by discussing about theory and approach. The theory that writer applied is Lucien Goldmann theory on Genetic Structuralism. This theory shows the connection among the structure in the novel and the structure in the real society in 19th century especially in 1860s, when and where the novel is created. Goldmann’s theory assists the writer in finding the worldview. In conducting this research, the writer used qualitative method to depict clearly about the research finding. The data of this research are dialogues and narration in Germinal novel. The result of this research is Zola as the author gave such a view of French society who lived in poverty line because of capitalism. The French society who worked as labors especially as miners experienced the misery, despotism and low wages, and becomes a victim of the greed capitalists. Zola revealed, even though he had never been involved in any industrial struggle, Zola wanted French society had better life-good salary, enough food, get their right as worker, etc. Hence, when Zola met Emile Basly, the figure who wanted capitalism changed to socialism, he put Basly figure on intrinsic element of Germinal as main character, Etiene Lantier. Etiene was illustrated became a character who followed socialism to reorganized the order of French society with the intention to provide a better and fairer life.
