Abstract

The research entitled Sociolinguistics Study of Women’s Linguistic Features Used in Oprah Winfrey Speech aims to describe the woman’s language features based on theory from Lakoff (1975) and also describe language fuctions based on theory from Jakobson (1966). This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are from the utterances in form of sentence, word, clause, and pharase, while the data sourch of this research is from Oprah Winfrey’s speech entitled power of believe which published on October 26th, 2016. The researcher found six features used in Oprah Winfrey’s speech. Those six language features are lexical hedges, superpolite form, rising intonation, avoidance strong swear word, intensifier, and emphatic stress. Intensifiers are the most frequent woman’s language features used in Oprah Winfrey’s speech because she want to emphasize and or strengthen her utterances deeply to attract addressee’s attention using intensifier. Meanwhile tag question wasn’t found in this research.Then, language functions served by woman’s language found in Oprah Winfrey’s speech are expressive function, directive function and emphatic function.
