Abstract

Mythology is a set of stories or beliefs about a particular person, institution or situation. It refers to a study of myths or to a body or collection of myths. One of the famous mythologies is from Nordic that tells the story of gods and goddesses of Asgard and other mythical creatures such as dwarves, elves and giants. Hence, there are some authors who rewrite the mythology and modified it into fictional story, one of the famous story is from Rick Riordan with his novel entitled Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer. Hence, in that case, the writer would like to describe Norse mythology as reflected in the novel of Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. In order to describe the Norse Mythology, this research is conducted descriptive qualitative method and using the theory Roland Barthes about semiotics. The results of the study showed that the novel is mostly based on the information of Norse mythology. There are many connotative meanings that is shown about the Norse mythology of gods and goddesses and sacred places, also with other mythical creatures in the novel. Yet, the denotative meaning also shows another side of the description of all of those elements. Thus, from the connotative and denotative meanings, the writer can draw the mythical concept of the object.
