Abstract

This study uses Catharine A. MacKinnon's sexual theory and sociological approach to research sexual violence in Texas, specifically in Jennifer Mathieu's novel Moxie. The novel examines the issue of sexual violence in high school settings in the 1990s, with a focus on Texas, which emerged as a major point of rising rates of sexual violence. Vivian, the main character, is motivated by the Riot Grrrl movement and uses Moxie's feminist movement to fight sexual harassment. To understand the social context that affects sexual violence, this study uses a sociological approach. In addition, Catharine A. MacKinnon's thesis explains that sexual violence is not only a sexual act but also a representation of a power struggle between individuals. Three forms of sexual violence were studied in the study: Gender harassment, sexual coercion and non-verbal harassment. The results showed the existence of forms of sexual violence in the educational environment and the impact of patriarchal standards on psychology, which showed how sexual violence in Moxie's novel reflected the social reality in Texas in the 1990s. As the main character, Vivian argues that acts of sexual violence can range from small movements such as chanting sex songs to important symbols of victim solidarity. This study studies sexual violence and the function of educational institutions as a powerful platform for social change. Key words: Catharine A. MacKinnon, Moxie Novel, Sexual Harassment
