Abstract
This research focuses on the theme of alienation experienced by the main character, Rachel, in Melissa Broder's Milk Fed. This alienation is examined using Erich Fromm's theory that highlights aspects of individual alienation from self, others, work, and nature. Through various scenes in the novel, this research reveals how social demands regarding beauty standards and external expectations create an identity crisis in Rachel, which in turn causes her alienation from her own body and emotions. Rachel's relationship with her mother, obsession with weight control, and feeling protected in social settings add dimensions to her alienation. In addition, this study also explains how a monotonous job that does not provide emotional well-being contributes to Rachel's feelings of alienation. The results show that the novel Milk Fed reflects the psychological challenges faced by individuals in modern society, particularly in relation to social pressures and the impact of unrealistic beauty norms. By examining Rachel's experiences, this study provides a deep insight into how alienation can affect an individual's mental health and identity, as well as the importance of creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for psychological well-being.
