Abstract

This article examines the cross-cultural adaptation of Indonesian students during the IISMA 2023 exchange program at Middle East Technical University (METU), focusing on their experiences in academic and cultural settings. The study aims to explore how students adjusted to METU’s diverse classroom environment, engaged with local peers, and dealt with cultural challenges. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected through three types of surveys: Likert scale, short answer, and semi-structured interviews. The participants, 12 out of 20 IISMA METU 2023 awardees, responded to questions related to cultural adaptation, academic challenges, and reintegration upon returning to Indonesia. The Likert survey assessed students’ perceptions of adaptation, while the short answer survey focused on the most challenging cultural differences and key lessons from Turkish culture. The interviews provided in-depth insights into their initial experiences, interactions with local students, and how they applied the knowledge gained during their exchange. The findings are classified under three themes: Challenges and Differences, Adaptation and Assimilation, and Reintegration, based on Kim’s (2001) cross-cultural adaptation theory.
