Abstract

In this thesis, the focus is on the depiction of the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) phenomena of 1984, as reflected in the 2014 film Pride. The primary objective of this research is to explore how the film illustrates the LGSM’s role in fostering solidarity and combating prejudice during the 1984–1985 UK miners' strike. The study employs a historical approach alongside Marxist theory and descriptive qualitative methods to analyze key scenes and dialogues from the film. The theoretical framework includes an examination of class solidarity, the empowerment of marginalized groups, and social acceptance. The analysis reveals that the film highlights three significant aspects of LGSM’s activism: first, the portrayal of class solidarity, emphasizing the unity between miners and the Lesbians and Gays community despite their different backgrounds; second, the empowerment of marginalized individuals, demonstrating how LGSM’s support gave voice and visibility to the Lesbians and Gays community; and third, the progress toward social acceptance, illustrating the gradual shift in societal attitudes as a result of the collaborative efforts between LGSM and the miners. The results indicate that Pride effectively captures the essence of LGSM’s impact on both the miners and the broader society. It shows how the coalition between the two groups challenged dominant prejudices and fostered a sense of shared struggle and mutual respect. This mutual support not only aided the miners during their strike but also contributed to a broader movement toward social acceptance and equality for the Lesbians and Gays community.
