Abstract

This research analyzes the characterization of Teddy Daniels, the main character in the novel Shutter Island. This novel delineates the story of Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshal who, along with his partner Chuck Aule, is sent to investigate the disappearance of a patient at Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island. The research objective of this research is to reveal the main character’s characterization in the Shutter Island novel. This research uses descriptive qualitative study. This research focuses on delineating Teddy’s characterization as portrayed in the Shutter Island novel. This research applied a structuralism approach that focuses on analyzing the intrinsic elements of the novel. This research uses Janet Burroway’s theory of character and characterization. The main data of this research comes from dialogue and narration while the data source is from the novel Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. The writer found out that Teddy Daniels' appeared to be described in various ways of characterization. Teddy Daniels' character is multifaceted, embodying a blend of intellect, observation, violence, and resilience in uncovering Shutter Island's mysteries.
