Abstract

This research focuses on the depiction of gang culture in the United States during the 2000s, as portrayed in Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give. The novel sheds light on how groups harsh realities of gang involvement while striving for solidarity and survival. The exploration of these themes highlights the violence within oppressive societal and the challenges individuals face in breaking free from them. This study applied descriptive qualitative method and the data were narration and dialogues from the Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give novel. To analyze the social context of gang culture in the U.S., the study employed Laurenson and Swingewood's sociological theories. This research makes a significant contribution on literature as a medium for social commentary. It underscores how novels like The Hate U Give can illuminate the intricate intersections of race, class, and violence, offering readers a deeper understanding of the challenges facing Black communities in America
