Abstract

In the current study, the writer explores the movie Turning Red to find the phenomenon of multiculturalism depicted through the scene as Mei Lee, the movie's main character, lives in Toronto, Canada, where the country is known for its cultural diversity. Therefore, this research aims to investigate multiculturalism seen in the movie through the scenes. The analysis focuses on the main character of the movie as she depicts Chinese culture among Canadians. The writer uses the multiculturalism theory by Stuart Hall to analyze multiculturalism. However, as the theory provides four types of multiculturalism, which are assimilationist, liberal, pluralist, critical, and cosmopolitan multiculturalism, the writer decides to use four features of pluralist multiculturalism as the movie realizes a heterogeneous phenomenon. Moreover, the research uses descriptive qualitative analysis to analyze dialogues and scenes from the movie. The analysis will be based on the scenes and dialogues that consist of pluralist multiculturalism. As a result, the research has found out four features of pluralist multiculturalism. They are recognition of cultural diversity, coexistence and mutual respect, cultural relativism and equality, and preservation. These findings and discussions are hoped to contribute to the understanding of how multiculturalism is formed in a diverse culture, in this case, Canada as a diverse country.
