Abstract

This research is intended to find out if there is a relationship between students' anxiety and their ability in speaking class. Based on the research problem, the purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between two variables, namely students' anxiety and their ability in speaking class. For this study, the researcher took the eleventh grade of SMA N 1 PUNGGUR as the participants. In sampling, the author used purposive sampling which helped to obtain the required data. This study used a correlational design with a quantitative approach. For instruments, the author used two types of instruments to collect data from both variables. The first instrument is a questionnaire developed by Horwitz et.al (1986), which contains 33 items with a 5-point Likert scale. This questionnaire was used to measure students' anxiety level. And the second instrument is a student speaking test. From this test the author gets a score that will be compared with other variables to measure the correlation with each other. The author does not lead the test itself, but takes from the data of the subject teacher at school. In measuring the correlation, the researcher took Pearson's Product Moment theory. The author did not calculate it manually, but used the SPSS programme to make it easier and more valid. The result of this study shows that students will score higher in their higher speaking performance if they have lower anxiety level, while students will score lower in their lower speaking performance if they have higher anxiety level.
