Abstract

he study aimed: (1) To describe the students’ perceptions of the use of TikTok in learning English outside the class for tenth-grade students in SMKN 1 Bandarlampung. (2) To find out how students practice learning English outside the class using the TikTok application. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The questionnaire and interview were conducted on the tenth-grade of Desain Komunikasi Visual-2 (X DKV-2) at SMKN 1 Bandarlampung. There were 30 students who fulfilled the questionnaires and 7 students were interviewed. The findings showed that most students had positive perceptions of using TikTok to learn English outside of class. Students perceive TikTok as a tool for improving English skills, finding it enjoyable and confidence-boosting. The platform gave convenience, ease of use and access, and abundant English content. This study also found that there were six common ways students use TikTok for English learning including enabling subtitles, noting materials, following English-focused accounts, paying attention to creators' explanations, exploring the "For You" page, and checking words on Google Translate.
