Abstract

This study aims to find out whether the fishbowl technique is effective to improve students’ speaking skills in giving opinions and to explore students' motivation in learning English after being taught the fishbowl technique in eleventh grade students of SMK 2 Bandar Lampung. The research is conducted by following the Quantitative Research Approach. This study uses a quasi-experimental research design which includes experimental class and controlled class using instruments, such as test and questionnaire. The research procedure begins with a pretest to determine students' speaking ability before being given treatment. The treatment was carried out after the pretest to teach students how to speak through the fishbowl technique, and lastly, the posttest. Sampling was carried out using a purposive sampling technique in which two classes, Class XI TAV 2 and XI TKJ 2. This research is XI TKJ 2 class as the experimental class that consists of 35 students and class X1 TAV 2 will be as the control class that consists of 35 students, So, total population is 70 students. The test results increased significantly with an average pre-test score of 68.51 and post-test score of 73.65 in the experimental class, and significantly increased with an average pre-test score of 67.71 and post-test score of 70.34 in the controlled class, It can be concluded that the pre-test and post-test values between the experimental class and the controlled class have significant developments. The research compared the mean value between the experimental class and the controlled class, the mean was greater in the experimental class. It was proven that the fishbowl technique had a significant effect on learning in class. aspects of the questionnaire with their numbers. The questionnaire uses positive statements (favorable) include 25 items, The Average score of social motivation is 3.29 and The Average score of biological motivation is 3.54. The speaking ability of students in eleventh grade at SMK N 2 Bandar Lampung has increased due to the application of the Fishbowl Technique. Teachers can use the fishbowl technique as an alternative technique to get students interested in learning to speak.
