Abstract

This study focuses on investigating the use of story mapping to improve reading comprehension of narrative texts and how this strategy is implemented. The method used in this research is qualitative and quantitative. This research was conducted on tenth-grade students at SMK N 1 Terbanggi Besar, class X PM 1. The data was obtained using several techniques such as tests and observations. In the test, the research begins with a pre-test, then carries out treatment, after which it ends with a post-test to determine whether students' reading comprehension has increased or not. The results of this study show the results in cycle 1 and cycle 2, the average score in the pre-test was 50.23 while in the post-test 1 in cycle 1 the score was 56.23. Thus, the increase in student scores is 6.30. Researcher found an increase in their scores after implementing story mapping in cycle 1. then the average score in cycle 1 was 56.23 while in post-test 2 the score was 79.43. Thus, the increase in student scores from post-test 1 and post-test 2 is 22.9. The increase in student score from pre-test to the last post-test was 19.2. In addition, observations were also made using a checklist table for students' physical activity starting from the beginning of the activity to the end of the activity. The results of the observations showed that after the treatment in the research, the students were more active and enthusiastic in learning narrative texts. By using story mapping, it makes the students easier to determine the generic structure of the story, summarizing the story well so that they can improve their reading comprehension. From the results of the two instruments, it can be concluded that the story mapping technique can significantly improve students' reading comprehension in narrative texts.
