Abstract

Slavery is described as a horrific and dehumanizing system that was rampant in the United States in the 19th century. It restrained and oppressed people, especially people of African descent, by treating them as property that could be traded and exploited. This is related to the concept of hegemony, which can be understood as domination or control exercised by certain groups over other groups in a systematic and widespread manner. This research aims to analyze the phenomenon of hegemonic slavery presented in the novel "The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead. Using theories of hegemony and sociology, this study investigates how dominant power and social control manifested in the practice of slavery that permeated the social structure of the 19th century United States. Through an in-depth analysis of characterization and narrative, it explores the power dynamics between the powerful and the enslaved, as well as the ways in which oppression, segregation, and dehumanization are intertwined. The construction of slavery also contributes to the way hegemony is maintained in the novel. Furthermore, it provides a comprehensive overview of the historical legacy of slavery and its relevance to the contemporary social and political context, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and acknowledging historical injustices in building a just and inclusive society. As such, it seeks to provide a deeper understanding of slavery as a complex social phenomenon that continues to influence the dynamics of modern society.
