Abstract

This study discusses metaphorical expressions found in Bali tourism articles using a semantic approach. It is believed they play a crucial role in cognitive and communicative communication, especially in reporting destinations like Bali. The writer discusses the use of metaphors in everyday life, including language and thought, in news articles about Bali. Then, highlight how these metaphors can provide insights into narrative construction, portrayal of cultural richness, and reader perception. This thesis has one research question, namely What are the metaphors about Bali found in selected tourism websites?. In this study, the writer used a qualitative descriptive method to present data analysis. The data is in the form of sentences and phrases from selected Bali tourism articles which conveyed the metaphorical expressions. This thesis uses a semantic approach to uncover the subjective experiences of readers as they encounter these metaphors, decipher the emotions and imagery evoked, and understand the implications for their understanding of Bali. Furthermore, this thesis uses the theory of metaphors by Lakoff and Johnson. The result of the analysis shows in 11 sources, there are 13 metaphorical expressions found. There are 4 orientational metaphors, 5 ontological metaphors, and 4 structural metaphors. This analysis reveals that various metaphorical expressions significantly influence the perception of Bali's cultural allure, geographical beauty, and accessibility to international tourists. These include orientational, ontological, and structural metaphors, which highlight the destination's rich cultural tapestry, spiritual significance, and exceptional qualities, enduring popularity, and rapid tourism sector growth.
