Abstract

Magic realism is a literary movement whose most important feature is the incorporation of fantastic events into narratives in a realistic way, which in turn blurs the boundaries of reality. This abstract aims to provide a brief overview of research that explores the captivating narrative of "The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida" by Clarissa Gunawan and analyzes its unique amalgamation of magical realism. The novel weaves reality with supernatural elements, creating a captivating literary landscape that challenges traditional notions of time, space, and human experience. This research focuses on how realism is described in The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida. Drawing on the theoretical framework of magical realism, this study aims to investigate the author's skillful blend of the mundane and the extraordinary, highlighting how narrative transcends the boundaries of reality to convey deep emotion, cultural identity, and social commentary. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. While the theory used in this study is the theory of magic realism from Wendy B Faris. By examining the manifestation of magical elements in the novel's setting, characters, and themes, this study highlights the transformative power of magical realism as a narrative technique, ultimately revealing how it allows readers to explore profound depths of meaning beyond conventional boundaries using a Post- Structuralism as a tool to look into the novel. The data source in this study is the novel The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida by Clarissa Goenawan (2020). The research data is taken from literary texts in the form of narratives and dialogues about magic realism. The study found that the existence of magical realism can be seen with the help of Wendy B Faris' characteristics of magical realism. Based on the results of the analysis, the novel The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida includes magical things in its narrative regarding the Japanese people's belief in mystical things. In this case, magic realism includes a series of irrational things related to the supernatural. Magic realism in The Perfect World combines these fantastic things in harmony with the realism they bring.
