Abstract

Humans directly communicate thoughts, concepts, purpose, and feelings using the language they can understand. People can use several communication mediums, such as having a conversation or discussion, using a poem, or listening to a song lyric. As a medium, songs are created to share and implicate the singers and the songwriters feelings or expressions and use verbal messages to make them more attractive to the listener. This research was conducted to find out the types and functions of conventional implicature in the album Small Town Boy (Deluxe) by Duncan Laurence. This research also finds out the intended message from the song verses as the message from the song is not delivered correctly, as this becomes an issue if the message from the song is not delivered clearly. It creates a misunderstanding of the status quo. In addition, the descriptive qualitative method was applied in this research. In particular, seventeen song snippets are categorized as declarative type, with 33,3% classified as assertive function, 28,6% classified as expressive function, and 19,1% classified as directive function. Meanwhile, four-song snippets are categorized as interrogative types of conventional implicature, with 14,2% classified as assertive function and 4,8% classified as expressive function. The researcher did not find data that fulfilled the requirements of directive function in the interrogative type of conventional implicature.
