Abstract

Social class has always been an element of human society. The existence of a social class is considered a social issue, as it can harm specific individuals or groups of society. In this research, the social issue becomes the discussion of the research because the researcher believes that the social issue is the closest to society as it happens where society lives. The research entitled Unraveling Social Class in Sally Rooney's Novel Normal People aims to reveal the social class that appeared in Rooney's novel. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to reveal the social class between one character to another. This research also used a descriptive qualitative method to describe and explain the data. The writer collected the data in the form of dialogues, words, and sentences from the primary data resource, the novel Normal People by Sally Rooney. To support the data supporting data from articles and journals are also used. This research used Sociological Literature as the approach. The writer used a theory from Alex Thio (1994) to find the result, which explains the class profile. The theory helps the writer to qualify the social class of each character. Where is shown by their all-around life and the scope of her friendship. This research shows that four unraveling social classes are found in the writer's view: upper class, middle class, working class, and lower class.
