Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether students’ speaking ability had improved significantly after the implementation of ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Bandar Lampung. This study used a quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest. This research was composed of appropriate data collection techniques, such as pre and post-testing. The procedure of this research was intiated with a pre-test to know precisely the students’ speaking ability before teartment, then the treatment accomplished after the students’ speaking ability before treatment, then the treatment accomplished after the pretest to teach students how to speak with ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method, and finally a posttest to determine the students’ speaking ability after treatment. To ensure the data was valid, the researcher measured the normality and reliability of the test. It was found that the data distribute was normal and reliable. The formulated hypothesis was tested by using a t-test with IBM SPSS 20 application. The t-test was used to examine whether there was a signitificant increase between the pre-test and post-test. The findings showed an increase in students’ speaking ability after the implementation of the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method. The results of the test increased signitificantly as the mean score was 62,62 in pre-test and 76,62 in post-test. The result of the t-test also showed that the signitificance (2-tailed) was 0.000 (p < 0.05). It means the the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Students’ speaking abilities in English of the tenth grade classes at SMA Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung increased due to the implementtion of ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method. The teacher could use ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method as an alternative technique to make students intereasted in learning speaking.
